About Ayutthaya
Established in 1350, the ancient city of Ayutthaya was the capital city of the Siamese Empire for 400 years until the Burmese army sacked it in 1767. In ancient times, Ayutthaya was considered to be one of the world’s most important cities. Today it is a premier tourist attraction, visited for its magnificent ruined temples as much as the more recently built temples such as Wat Phra Si Sanphet, Wat Mongkhon Bophit, Wat Pananchoeng and Wat Chai Mongkol, with its huge bronze statue of the Reclining Buddha. Ayutthaya is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city lies 80km north of Bangkok on an island created by the joining of three rivers.
30km south of Ayutthaya on a river island is Bang Pa-In, the Royal Family’s Summer Palace. It is renowned for its stunning Thai architecture and is open from 8:30am until 3:30pm
Bang Pa-In Summer Palace is located 30 kilometers south of Ayutthaya on route to Ayutthaya and is on a small island called Bang Pa-In in the Chao Phraya River. The stunning Bang Pa-In Palace is open to the public daily from 8.30 am until 3.30 pm.
